5 Reasons Your Kenyan Business Website Is Losing You Clients

Most business websites in Kenya don't fail because they are ugly. They fail quietly: people arrive, don't find what they need quickly, and leave to call a competitor. These are the five problems we see most often when businesses ask us to look at their site, with a fix for each that you can start on this week.

1. It is slow on a phone

Nearly all of your visitors are on a phone, many on mobile data. If the first screen takes more than a few seconds to show, a good share of them are gone before they see what you do. The usual culprits are huge photos straight from a camera, a heavy theme, and a pile of plugins and tracking scripts.

Fix: test your home page in Google's PageSpeed Insights on mobile. Resize and compress your images and remove anything you don't need. Our speed guide walks through it.

2. Visitors can't tell what to do next

Within a few seconds of landing, a visitor should know three things: what you do, who it is for, and how to get it. Many sites open with a slogan and a slideshow, and hide the phone number in the footer.

Fix: say plainly what you do in the first line ("Sofa and carpet cleaning in Nairobi and Kiambu"). Put one main button at the top — for most Kenyan businesses that is WhatsApp, because customers would rather send a message than fill a form — and a call button next to it. Repeat the button further down the page and keep a WhatsApp button visible as people scroll.

3. The contact form is broken, and nobody knows

This one is more common than anyone admits. Forms get built, launched and never tested again. Emails land in spam, the mail setting on the hosting changes, a plugin updates, or the form was never connected properly in the first place. The visitor sees "Thank you", and the message goes nowhere.

Fix: this week, send a test message through every form on your site and check that it arrives. Better, make sure every message is also saved somewhere you can see it (a dashboard or a spreadsheet), not only emailed. Then test again every month.

4. There is nothing to make them trust you

People are careful about paying businesses they found online, and rightly so. A site with stock photos, no prices, no real names and no reviews looks like it could be anyone.

Fix:

5. You don't show up on Google Maps

When people search "near me", Google shows a map with three businesses before any website. If you don't have a complete Google Business Profile, you aren't in that map, no matter how good your website is.

Fix: claim and complete your Google Business Profile, add photos, and ask happy customers for reviews. Our local SEO guide covers the details.

How to check your own site in 15 minutes

  1. Open your site on your phone using mobile data, not Wi-Fi. Time how long it takes.
  2. Ask someone who doesn't know your business to tell you, after five seconds, what you do and how to contact you.
  3. Send a test enquiry through every form and button.
  4. Search your business name and your main service plus "Nairobi" on Google, and see what comes up.
  5. Count the real photos, prices and reviews on your home page.

If you fix only one thing this month, make it number 3. A beautiful site with a broken form loses every single lead it earns.
